Our Children

Stewart Homes operates ten staffed residences for medically complex children from birth to early teens some of whom are in need of total care. Most of the young people living with us have medical needs that go beyond the services available in normal residential care settings. These ten homes, five each in Peterborough and Pickering, provide twenty-four hour care and supervision for six to eight individuals each of whom have one or more of the following conditions or disorders:
  • cerebral palsy
  • Angleman's Syndrome
  • degenerative brain disease
  • hepatitis, HIV, etc.
  • micro or hydro encephala
  • muscular dystrophy
  • seizure disorder
  • acquired brain injury
  • sensory impairment
  • degenerative disease
  • colostomy
  • tracheotomy
  • ileostomy
  • gastrostomy
  • scoliosis
Stewart Homes provides high quality physical care and health maintenance for the residents of these programs. All of our children are given as much community exposure, stimulation and varied experience as they can safely manage. Our overall plan is to look after health and safety issues first and, once these are under control, to provide for each young person's ongoing emotional and quality of life needs. All homes are fully wheelchair accessible.

Residential Care at Stewart Homes Includes:
  • full physical care developmental assessment and training
  • gastrostomy, tracheotomy, ileostomy and colostomy management
  • administration of prescribed medications

  • specialized nutrition management
  • medical monitoring and referral to appropriate medical professionals
