Developmental Services Ontario

History

Stewart Homes has offered a respite service in Peterborough and Pickering to families in the GTA and Central East Ontario for several years. We serve families where a family member has medical or developmental challenges. We provide both day and overnight relief services.
Relief may be paid for privately or may be funded indirectly through a community agency or through The Ontario PASSPORT Program.

Goals of our Respite Care Program

1. To alleviate stress and promote good mental health for the primary care provider(s) by providing a break away from the demands and routines of caring.  These respite breaks can be a few days long or a few weeks, whatever is required.

2. To benefit the individual socially and physically by providing opportunities to interact socially with others in a different environment while ensuring that all of their various needs and requirements are well taken care of.

3. To meet the service expectations of the parents by being open, friendly, caring, responsible and professional ensuring that their loved one will be well looked after and returned safely at the end of the respite period.

License and Funding

Respite care is provided in one of our licensed group homes with from five to eight residents. A consulting physician is available for consultation and direction on an individualized treatment plan if required. The program is funded on a per diem that is set by the Province of Ontario. The staffing levels, clinical content and consulting services are prescribed by the Province.  Sometimes, parents are referred to Stewart Homes by a community agency, that takes the responsibility of securing funding directly from the Province. However, parents are able to purchase the service directly using funds provided by The Ontario Government's PASSPORT Program if they qualify.  Click here for full details.

Occasionally space is available in one of our day programs. Parents or the referring agency are expected to provide transportation to and from the respite care location for day time relief as well as overnight relief. If resources are available, Stewart Homes will provide transportation for an additional cost. Day time relief may last for one day or as many days as the family needs. The overnight relief may start in the afternoon of the day of placement; it may last one night, several nights or longer as needed.

Fees will be charged for the first day of care but not the last day.  Private individuals using this service are required to pay one half of the fee when the arrangement is made and the bed reserved and the remaining portion of the fee on arrival.  Children's Aid societies using this service will be billed through our usual invoicing system.  Individuals in our Respite Care Program funded through the Ontario PASSPORT Program will be paid for directly through that program.
