Our Residents

Stewart Homes operates eleven staffed residences for medically complex children from birth to young adulthood, many of whom are in need of total care.  Most of the young people living with us have medical needs that go beyond the services available in normal residential care settings.  These eleven homes, five in Peterborough and six in Pickering, provide twenty-four hour care and supervision for six to nine individuals each of whom have one or more of the following conditions or disorders:

cerebral palsy degenerative brain disease acquired brain injury colostomy scoliosis Angleman's Syndrome degenerative disease palliative care

micro or hydro encephaly muscular dystrophy sensory impairment ileostomy seizure disorder hepatitis, HIV, etc. gastrostomy end of life care

Stewart Homes provides high quality physical care and health maintenance for the residents of these programs.  All of our children are given as much community exposure, stimulation and varied experience as they can safely manage.  Our overall plan is to look after health and safety issues first and, once these are under control, to provide for each young person's ongoing emotional and quality of life needs.  All homes are fully wheelchair accessible.

Residential Care at Stewart Homes Includes:

• full physical care, developmental assessment and training
• gastrostomy, ileostomy and colostomy management
• administration of prescribed medications
• physiotherapy
• specialized nutrition management
• medical monitoring and referral to appropriate medical professionals
